Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Let’s be honest. Underneath that polished veneer, the cracks are starting to show. You’ve tried handling them yourself, because that’s who you are – independent, resourceful, and always able to take care of yourself. But the spackle is breaking. Who are you if not that characterization of success, living up to the expectations set by your parents, friends, and middle school basketball coach? Maybe those cracks are the result of you running full speed against a wall, again and again. If you’re ready to find another way around the wall, I'm your person. Let’s be honest. I am Dr. Stephanie Miodus, a licensed psychologist dedicated to providing comprehensive assessments for autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and developmental challenges. My goal is to help you better understand your strengths, address difficulties, and access the support you deserve. Using evidence-based tools like the ADOS-2, I deliver clear, in-depth evaluations of social, emotional, cognitive, and academic functioning. Whether you are seeking testing for academic accommodations, personal development, or deeper self-awareness, I am here to assist you. Each assessment includes a detailed report and a follow-up session to ensure you have practical, actionable next steps. Beyond assessments, I offer social skills groups, executive function coaching, and autism consultations for schools and legal settings. I also provide individual therapy services rooted in a strength-based, neurodiversity affirming approach, using evidence-based techniques customized to fit your needs. My experience includes adapting therapy for autistic and neurodivergent individuals, as well as working with those who have been adopted or have experienced trauma, including sexual assault or chronic illness. I approach therapy through a trauma-informed lens and work with you collaboratively to tailor treatment to help you set meaningful goals and achieve sustainable progress. I provide in-person services in New York City and telehealth sessions across New York and Pennsylvania. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), I take an integrative approach to therapy for adults and older adults. My work centers on helping you navigate anxiety, depression, relational trauma, and the often-disorienting weight of life transitions. Whether you're grieving a loss, stumbling through the fog after an impactful change, or simply wondering "how did I get here?" — you don't have to figure it out alone. I believe in the power of genuine, human-to-human connection. As your therapist, I aim to be a steady and honest partner in your growth: someone who celebrates your wins, sits with you in the hard moments, and gently challenges you when you're ready. Together, we'll work to help you discover your own inner strength, build self-compassion, and create a life that feels more aligned with who you truly are. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, because neither is your story. I draw from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to build practical coping skills, psychodynamic therapy to understand how your past shows up in your present, and solution-focused techniques when you need momentum and clarity. I also incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you build self-awareness and create lasting change. What you can expect from our work together is a safe, judgment-free space. I believe in being a real human in the room with a clinical lens, balancing warmth and personality with genuine therapeutic support. Your unique story, values, and goals shape the direction of our work, and I tailor my approach to meet you exactly where you are. My path to becoming a therapist began early. Growing up, I played the role of the fixer, the doer, the "don't need to worry about her" child in my family, because that was where I felt most seen. Those personal experiences gave me a close view of how isolation and shame keep people stuck in familiar but unhealthy loops, and how one safe, honest connection can begin to untangle that. That understanding deepened my commitment to care that is both compassionate and direct, never dismissive. Now, I bring my full, authentic self to each session: curious, collaborative, and unafraid to sit with hard things. Outside of my role as a mental health clinician, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones and my cat, Chichi. I also love trying new restaurants, catching movies at different theaters around the city, traveling to the next destination on my ever-growing bucket list, and dabbling in art just for the fun of it.
Thank you for considering me as you search for that support. I know how hard it is to take this step. I help high achievers who feel burned-out, anxious and feel like their never enough, find balance and reconnect to what truly matters to them. My clients “do it all,” school, work, they are the go-to for family and friends, and they are tired! In our work together, you’ll have a grounding space to untangle what you’re carrying and learn how to move forward with balance, clarity, and calm. I integrate mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), nervous system regulation and culturally-responsive care into our sessions tailored to your goals and values. I offer individual therapy and career coaching to adults and university students. I believe in applying your strengths and resources to help you meet your goals. You don't have to keep doing it all alone. Call or message me today for a FREE 15 minute consultation. Ofrezco servicios en español.

I practice via telehealth in NY, NC, WA, and TX. I specialize in working with adult men and women who may look fine on the outside, but inside you're struggling to get your own needs met, self-doubt, perfectionism, and shame. Gestalt Therapy goes beyond looking only at the cognitive, linear perspective of the person. It demands of the therapist an awareness of the body and how it manifests in the psyche. Through its focus on process rather than content, the patient gains an experiential awareness of how they do what they do and new choices emerge spontaneously. The radical focus on process in Gestalt creative therapy keeps the work alive and full of possibility for both the patient and for my work as a therapist. Melissa Bennett-Heinz obtained her master’s degree in clinical social work from Columbia University (Class of 2002) and is a graduate of Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy in New York City, NY. In addition to her background in Gestalt Therapy, she obtained her bachelor's and master’s degrees from the esteemed conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, in New York City, where she majored in Oboe Performance. Melissa completed cognitive behavioral studies under the tutelage of Dr. William Sanderson. She is a licensed clinical social worker in NY, WA, NC, and TX and has over twenty years of specialized training and experience in PTSD, childhood abuse, mood and anxiety disorders. Melissa brings her background as a classical musician and deep spirituality together in her unique approach in Gestalt's creative and experiential therapy.
Laila is a NY State-licensed psychotherapist who specializes in helping couples, families, and individuals work through challenges and areas that feel stuck to develop more fulfilling relationships. She brings a decade of experience, and both systemic and psychodynamic training to help clients achieve meaningful change.
Growing up with learning disabilities, I had an experience that is all too familiar for the neurodivergent community. Often feeling misunderstood and out of place, I was faced with indifference, ignorance, neglect, gaslighting, shame, and the assumption that I could navigate a world that was not built for me without the support I so badly needed. Lonely, adrift, and struggling to find a sense of belonging, I was cast aside and left to fend for myself. After a series of negative experiences with mental health resources and support, my personal journey led me to a couples therapist in 2014. There, I embarked on a journey of transformation, and I was able to see the profound impact that the right therapy relationship could have on a person. It was then that I was introduced to Gestalt psychotherapy, which I immediately connected with. From there, I set forth on a new journey to study Gestalt psychotherapy at the Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy, a post-graduate training program. Pursuing this path, I have continued to experience connectedness, belonging, compassion, the wonder of curiosity, and love itself. Arriving at this place of acceptance and understanding changed everything for me. Understanding that this positive experience is not the norm for members of the neurodivergent community, I decided to dedicate myself to providing that same transformation for others. With this mission, I founded Welcome Home Healing in 2023. Since then, I have had the pleasure of helping many clients embrace their own innate worth, gifts, individuality, and the freedom to shed their masks of shame and self doubt.

As a mental health professional with 26 years of experience, I am dedicated to helping children, adults, and geriatric populations navigate anxiety, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and grief and loss. My approach is built upon the pillars of warmth, compassion, and evidence-based therapies, as I am passionate about the power of human connection and resilience. Let’s work together to discover your strengths and develop practical coping skills. I believe in creating a collaborative, open, and affirming environment that is tailored to your unique strengths and abilities. Your healing journey may include Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectal Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness, art therapy (younger patients), and more approaches to help you manage self-doubt and develop healthy coping skills. At all times, I practice person-centered therapy, respecting your self-determination and honoring confidentiality, which helps me promote your best interest and develop a life worth living. I look forward to exploring your personal journey and experience in our work together. My path to becoming a therapist began as a mental health screener for the World Trade Center employees and volunteers who worked at ground zero after 9/11, who faced indescribable tragedy and environmental exposure to an unprecedented event in our nation's history. This experience shaped who I am and the compassionate, patient-focused therapist I strive to be, one that enables me to bring a comprehensive understanding of loss and grief to my practice now. When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, from hiking the trails to gardening at home. I also love music and volunteering in my community to strengthen connections.
With seven years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I work with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults, helping people navigate life transitions, behavioral challenges, anxiety, depression, trauma, stress management, self-esteem concerns, attachment issues, and relationship difficulties. My goal is to meet you where you are. Whether you're carrying something heavy or simply searching for a clearer path forward, I'm committed to creating a warm, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, seen, supported, and understood. When you feel that kind of safety, meaningful growth becomes possible — and that's what we'll work toward together: healing, resilience, and the life you envision for yourself. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to support you as we work together toward your goals. In our sessions, you can expect a nonjudgmental space where you feel empowered to share your experiences, explore challenges, build on your strengths, and create meaningful growth and change. Because every person's journey is unique, I tailor treatment to your individual needs and goals. My warm, empathetic approach may draw on person-centered therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), alongside other evidence-based interventions, to provide care that is personalized, collaborative, and genuinely responsive to your experiences. My path to becoming a therapist began with a genuine desire to understand people and how our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors shape the lives we live. That curiosity led me toward direct work with families, children, adolescents, and young adults in crisis, experiences that deepened my commitment to trauma-informed, individualized care. Working alongside people in some of their most difficult moments strengthened my ability to show up with compassion, empathy, and understanding, in an environment where people feel genuinely supported. I love playing softball and catching baseball games whenever I can. When I'm not on the field or in the stands, I enjoy watching movies and TV, traveling, and spending time with the friends, family, and loved ones who matter most to me.
The enormous number of stressors we face daily are intense these days: the climate, global unrest and politics, the economy, overwork, isolation, disconnection. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage alone. Anxiety, anger, depression, resentment, boredom; sadness, rage, exhaustion, denial. If you're struggling with any of this -- or any other states that often bring people to therapy, like feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of direction, emptiness, grief -- it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded, and find a better path forward. I offer both in-person & remote therapy. If you're suffering, struggling, having difficulty focusing or functioning, you may really benefit from talking with an empathic and skilled therapist (with room for humor). Life is a lot to handle on one's own. If you've ever considered trying to better understand things about your life, the first phone call awaits. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers deep empathic understanding and useful insights that can be grounding and freeing. Therapy expands your capacities and coping strategies while helping you understand yourself & loved ones better. Significant change takes time, but often real relief is experienced just by starting the process. Are you ready to begin?
Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about what’s going on internally? Whether you’re wrestling with academic pressures, struggling to understand why certain tasks feel harder than they should, or wondering if there’s more to why you feel anxious or disconnected, I’m here to help you find clarity and answers. I’m a psychologist in New York City with a focus on assessments that go beyond surface-level challenges, helping students like you understand who they are and what they need to succeed. Many of the students who find testing helpful are motivated, thoughtful, and want to know themselves better. They may feel like no matter how hard they try, something still feels off, or they feel out of sync with others. If you’ve been wondering if there’s a reason behind your difficulties with focus, social interactions, anxiety, or even low moods, psychological testing can help reveal what’s happening beneath the surface. I work especially well with students who want a deeper understanding of themselves, so they can navigate college life, relationships, and personal goals with confidence. The results of testing shouldn’t feel like another test to understand. My approach is about making sense of what’s going on in a clear, accessible way. My goal is for you to feel equipped to take on college – and life – with greater self-awareness and practical tools that work for you.

We specialize in providing bilingual/bi-cultural psychotherapy to Asian international students, especially Chinese students. All our therapists are familiar with the nuances in Asian cultures and can provide bilingual therapy. Therapy can be a little nerve-wrecking for many college students who are first-time therapy seekers. In our work, you will be warmly supported to ease your way into emotional awareness, see your true self more clearly, feel safer, and move towards actual changes you want.
